The Wind Did the Damage.
Matt Wanted It Fixed Once, the Right Way.

Matt’s home in New Paltz sits on an open stretch of Ulster County, where windstorms come through often, and the roof takes the brunt of every one. After a storm left visible damage on the shingles, Matt called us for an inspection.

We found qualifying wind damage his homeowner’s insurance policy would cover, and walked him through the claim process from start to finish: the documentation, the photos, and the back-and-forth with the carrier. By the time the install was on the calendar, Matt had a fully approved claim, a confirmed material selection, and a plan for a complete roof system.

A Wind-Damaged Roof on a Beautiful Hudson Valley Home

What the Install Looked Like

With the wind damage documented and the insurance claim approved, the path forward was clear. Before the crew was scheduled, we verified one important detail about the roof assembly: Matt’s home has spray-foam insulation applied directly to the underside of the roof deck, which creates an “unvented” roof system. The plan was built around that assembly.

The Old Shingles Come Off, Down to the Deck

A full tear-off lets us inspect every square foot of the roof deck for soft spots, water staining, or rot, and replace any board that's compromised before the new system goes on. Layering new shingles over old ones hides those problems instead of fixing them. On Matt's roof, the existing single layer came off in full, and the deck was checked board by board before the new system started going on.

What Goes Under the Shingles Matters Just as Much

Once the deck was ready, we installed an ice and water shield in the spots most prone to leaks: along the eaves, in valleys, and around chimneys, skylights, and vents. It's a self-sealing membrane that grips around any nail driven through it, so even if water finds its way past the shingles, it can't reach the wood. Across the rest of the roof we laid synthetic underlayment, a tear-resistant moisture barrier that's lighter and stronger than the felt paper most older roofs were built with. Together, these two layers keep water out of the house long after the shingles take their share of wear.

CertainTeed Landmark PRO in Moire Black

Matt's new roof is finished in CertainTeed's Landmark PRO, an architectural-style shingle made of two laminated layers of asphalt instead of the single flat layer you'd see on a builder-grade three-tab. The result is a thicker, heavier shingle that holds up better in wind, casts a richer shadow line across the slopes, and lasts longer in New York weather. Moire Black gives the roof a deep charcoal tone that grounds the gray-green siding and crisp white trim, and looks clean against the open sky and mountain backdrop.

Also Included

CertainTeed 50-Year Warranty

The Landmark PRO shingle is covered by CertainTeed 5-Star Warranty (50-yr materials / 30-yr workmanship). The coverage is transferable, so if Matt ever sells the home, the remaining protection moves with it.

A Ridge Detail Matched to the Roof Assembly

Matt's home is built with spray-foam insulation applied to the underside of the deck, an unvented assembly that doesn't get the typical ridge-vent finish. We installed a closed ridge cap matched to that assembly, so the top of the roof stays sealed and consistent with how the home was built to perform.

New Flashing, Drip Edge, and Pipe Boots Throughout

The pieces that fail first on most roofs aren't the shingles, they're the small accessory components around chimneys, vent stacks, and roof edges. We installed new drip edge along every eave and rake, replaced every pipe boot around plumbing penetrations, and added fresh flashing everywhere it was needed, so no aging part of the old system carried over.

Detailed Photo Documentation From Start to Finish

Every phase of the project was photographed and saved: the tear-off, the deck, the ice and water shield, the underlayment, the flashing details, and the finished roof. The same documentation that supported the insurance claim now lives as a permanent record of what was actually installed.

The Damage Is Behind Him, and the New Roof Looks Like It Belongs.

From his first call to Extera through the final walkthrough, Matt didn’t have to chase paperwork, second-guess the install, or wonder what was happening on his roof on any given day. The wind damage that started this project is now a story rather than a worry, and the insurance claim is closed.

The new Moire Black roof finishes the home cleanly against the gray-green siding and the surrounding Hudson Valley, and the compliments from neighbors that Matt mentioned in his review tell us we hit the mark on the curb-appeal side too.
