Because Alvis was planning for solar later, the assessment focused on building a roof that would outlast the panels going on top of it. We confirmed the vented roof system configuration, worked through color selection with him, and scoped every protection layer the new system would need.
A full tear-off means every shingle, every nail, and every layer of the old roof comes off, down to the bare wood deck. We don't lay new shingles over an old roof, because that traps any existing damage underneath and shortens the life of the new system. Starting from a clean deck matters even more when solar panels are coming later.
Before the shingles go on, two layers of protection cover the deck. The ice and water shield is a self-sealing membrane installed at the most vulnerable spots — the eaves, the valleys, and anywhere water tends to pool. It blocks leaks even if shingles above it get damaged or torn off. A synthetic underlayment then covers the rest of the deck as a second line of defense. These layers stay hidden once the roof is finished, but they're the reason the system holds up over decades.
Landmark PRO is CertainTeed's architectural shingle, which is heavier, more dimensional, and longer-lasting than a basic three-tab shingle. It's built to handle weather and time better, which is exactly what a roof needs when it's going to be the foundation for solar. Alvis chose Moire Black, a deep, even-toned color that grounds the look of the brick and siding below.
Alvis's new roof is backed by CertainTeed's top coverage tier: 50 years on materials, 30 years on workmanship. We handed over the paperwork at completion.
A vented roof system lets air move through the attic, which prevents the moisture buildup that can damage shingles and the wood underneath. We planned the ventilation during design and built it in on install day.
Roof accessories are the small but critical pieces that keep water out of the seams: flashing, vents, drip edge, and pipe boots. We replaced all of them as part of the new system, because reusing old accessories on a new roof creates weak spots that turn into leaks later.
We photographed every phase of the install, from the bare deck through the finished roof. Alvis has a permanent record his future solar installer can reference for what's on the roof and how it was built.
