Lars came to us after talking to other contractors who tried to talk him out of metal. He already had solar on part of the roof and wanted to add more, but he wasn’t going to put new panels on the patched-over shingles that were already on there. What he wanted was a standing seam roof that would let future solar mounts clamp to the seams instead of drilling penetrations through the deck.
He also wanted the job done the right way, with documentation, on a house whose old shingles had been layered in patches and were hiding leaky decking underneath.

We inspected the roof, planned the solar-ready layout, and finalized the material decisions before the crew was on the calendar. Lars picked a 24-gauge flat-pan snap-lock standing seam system from Drexel Metals in Hemlock Green, a color chosen to sit naturally against the trees on the property.
We coordinated with a third-party contractor for foam sealing underneath the deck on the cathedral-ceiling section, since there was no other access. We planned new skylights, new chimney flashing, and full-deck high-temperature ice and water shield from the start.
A full tear-off means every shingle, every nail, and every layer of the old roof comes off, down to the bare wood deck. We don’t lay new roofing over old shingles, because that traps damage underneath and shortens the life of the new roof.
Starting from a clean deck also lets us see what’s actually under there. In Lars’s house, the deck had soft, leaky sections that the old shingles had been hiding, and we replaced the bad wood before the new system went on.
Before the metal goes on, we cover the entire deck in high-temperature ice and water shield. This is a self-sealing membrane that blocks leaks even if water gets past the metal above it. The “high-temp” version is important under a metal roof, because metal expands and contracts with temperature and can get hot in the sun. Standard underlayment isn’t rated for that. Full-deck coverage is the standard for a metal install, not a partial strip in the valleys.
Standing seam metal is a roof system where long vertical panels lock together with raised ribs running from eave to ridge. The snap-lock design we used clicks each panel into the next without exposed fasteners, so there are no nail heads on the surface to fail over time.
The raised ribs are also what make the roof solar-ready: solar mounts can clamp directly to the seams instead of being bolted through the deck, which means no holes punched through the roof when the panels go on. The 24-gauge thickness is the heavier of the two common standing seam options.
During the install, the crew found that Lars's existing skylights had only been screwed into the drywall, not into the framing. We replaced them and anchored the new ones correctly into the joists, so they're structurally sound and watertight.
Flashing is the metal that seals the joint between the chimney and the roof. We installed a new metal flashing system tied into the standing seam panels, so water can't sneak in around the brick.
While planning the roof, we suggested moving the vent pipes so they wouldn't crowd the future solar panel layout. We also rerouted the bathroom fans, which had been venting into the attic insulation, so they now vent properly out through the eaves.
We documented the install using a drone, capturing the high-temp ice and water shield going down across the deck, the Hemlock Green standing seam going up, and the finished roof from above. Lars has a visual record of the system underneath and how the work was done.
Lars no longer thinks about the patched-over leaks. The roof is set up for solar mounts that clamp to the seams instead of punching holes through the deck. The bathroom fans vent the way they should, and the skylights are anchored where they should be.
From the driveway, the Hemlock Green standing seam blends right in with the trees and looks like it belongs on the house. The system underneath, from the high-temp ice and water shield to the new decking, is built for the long run.
